ER5356 aluminum-magnesium alloy welding wire: performance, application

ER5356 aluminum-magnesium alloy welding wire, as an important welding material, has been widely used in aerospace, automobile manufacturing, shipbuilding and construction. Its welding performance and mechanical properties make it one of the preferred materials for aluminum alloy welding.

Characteristics of ER5356 welding wire
ER5356 welding wire is an aluminum-magnesium alloy welding wire containing a small amount of titanium. Its chemical composition mainly includes aluminum (remainder), magnesium (about 4.5% to 5.5%), manganese (0.05% to 0.20%), chromium (0.05% to 0.20%), titanium (0.06% to 0.20%) and a small amount of silicon, iron, copper and zinc. This welding wire has good corrosion resistance, thermal cracking resistance and high strength. The welded joint has high strength and corrosion resistance.

Preparation process
ER5356 welding wire is usually prepared by continuous extrusion-drawing scraping brightening technology. During the preparation process, the aluminum-magnesium alloy raw material is first made into a wire billet through a continuous extrusion process, and then after multiple water tank drawing tests and parameter adjustments, a finished welding wire with good surface quality is finally obtained. Studies have shown that when the extrusion speed is between 9~16r/min and the extrusion temperature is between 400~450℃, an ER5356 aluminum-magnesium alloy wire billet with a diameter of 3.2mm can be prepared. Further, by drawing the wire at a speed between 10cm/s~14cm/s and good die lubrication, a finished welding wire with a diameter of 1.6mm can be obtained.

Welding performance
ER5356 welding wire is suitable for welding a variety of aluminum alloys, such as 6061, 6063, 5083, 5086, etc. Its welded joint has high strength and excellent corrosion resistance, and is particularly suitable for argon arc welding (MIG welding) of aluminum-magnesium alloys. The microstructure and performance of welded joints can be comprehensively evaluated by metallographic, scanning electron microscopy, electron backscatter diffraction and transmission microstructure observation methods, combined with microhardness test, tensile mechanical property test, bending test and penetration test. For example, when ER5356 welding wire is used to weld 5083 aluminum-magnesium alloy plates, the tensile strength of the welded joint can reach 287MPa, the strength coefficient can reach 84%, and the quality of bending and penetration test inspections meets the relevant standards of the shipbuilding industry.

Application scenarios
ER5356 welding wire has a wide range of applications in many fields. In shipbuilding, the use of aluminum-magnesium alloy welded components to replace part of the steel as the upper structure and outfitting parts of the ship can reduce weight by more than 50%, while compensating for the loss of steel caused by rust during service. In the field of aerospace, ER5356 welding wire is widely used in the welding of key components such as aircraft fuselages and wings due to its excellent welding performance and mechanical properties. In addition, in the fields of automobile manufacturing and construction, ER5356 welding wire also plays an important role in the welding of car bodies, frames, doors and windows and other parts.
